Iron alters red blood cell morphology.

چکیده
Under physiologic conditions a small percentage ( 3%) of red blood cells (RBCs) are irreversibly trapped within the fibrin clot mesh. By contrast, in prothrombotic states such as diabetes mellitus, significantly more RBCs are tightly bound to fibrin fibers. Such interactions affect clot properties, making it more resistant to fibrinolytic degradation. This phenomenon may explain thrombolytic resistance frequently seen in diabetic patients. In most cases these patients also have higher-than-usual levels of iron.

Serum Iron Concentration in Children with Giardiasis
SUMMARY Giardia is a protozoan parasite which exists in the small intestine in man. This parasite could act as a barrier against fat absorption. It also results in anemia as a result of interference with folic acid vitamin B6 and probably iron absorption. In this study a total of 198 infested and 35 noninfested school children were studied for serum Iron and TIBC. The results showed the Iron...
متن کاملAnemia in surgical intensive care patients.
BACKGROUND The cause of the anemia of patients in surgical intensive care units (SICU) is not completely clear but is likely to be multifactorial. This study investigated a possible role for immune activation in the anemia of SICU patients. METHODS Neopterin plasma levels, as a measure of T-cell-macrophage-axis activation, RBC-counts, Hb, Hct, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, HDW, red cell morphology and...
متن کاملTestosterone alters iron metabolism and stimulates red blood cell production independently of dihydrotestosterone.
Testosterone (T) stimulates erythropoiesis and regulates iron homeostasis. However, it remains unknown whether the (type II) 5α-reduction of T to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) mediates these androgenic effects, as it does in some other tissues. Our purpose was to determine whether inhibition of type II 5α-reductase (via finasteride) alters red blood cell (RBC) production and serum markers of iron h...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Formulae Based on Red Blood Cell Indices in Differentiating Between Iron Deficiency Anemia and Beta Thalasemia Minor
Background and Aims: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and beta thalassemia minor (BTM) are the most common hypochromic microcytic anemias, and it is regarded important to differentiate between them. several formulae can be taken into consideration based on red blood cell (RBC) parameters in order to distinguish between these two disorders. Hence, the present study intended to evaluate the sensitivi...
متن کاملRed cell distribution width in the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia.
OBJECTIVE 1. To compare peripheral smear (PS) and Red cell distribution width (RDW) in diagnosis of Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in various grades. 2. To study the changes in RDW and PS after therapy. METHODS Children in the age group of six months to five years with microcytic (MCV<80fl) anemia (Hemoglobin <11 g%) were evaluated. Those who had received blood transfusion and /or were already ...
